About Tbilisi

This page may contain affiliate links.

  • Tbilisi has low crime rates compared to most European cities. The Old Town has narrow cobblestone streets with churches and traditional buildings, while areas like Vera and Marjanishvili have developed a coffee and wine bar scene that draws expats and younger locals. The city mixes Soviet-era blocks, 19th-century balconied houses, and newer construction - it's not polished, but that's part of the appeal.
  • Eating alone is normal here and nobody will give you a second look. English works in tourist areas and newer restaurants, but less so in local spots or with older residents. A few Georgian words go over well - 'gamarjoba' for hello, 'madloba' for thank you.
  • Emergency services are on 112, and some operators speak English. Standard urban precautions apply - watch your phone on crowded buses, stick to lit streets at night. The main safety concerns are traffic (drivers are aggressive and crosswalks are suggestions) and uneven sidewalks.
  • The metro costs 1 GEL and runs until midnight - it's straightforward with just two lines. After midnight, use the Bolt app for taxis. One thing to know: Tbilisi runs late. Most breakfast places don't open until 10am, and dinner usually starts after 8pm.

Language & Communication

Georgian is the main language. English works in tourist areas, newer restaurants, and with younger people. Less reliable in local neighborhoods or with older residents. Emergency 112 has some English speakers. A few Georgian phrases appreciated but not expected.

Cultural Tips
  • Churches require women to cover their heads and shoulders, and many want skirts over pants. Every church has headscarves and wrap skirts at the entrance that you can borrow.
  • The city runs on a late schedule - breakfast usually starts around 10am, dinner after 8pm. Tipping wasn't traditional here but 10% is now common in touristy restaurants.
  • Wine culture is a big deal - toasts at meals can go on for a while. If someone invites you to drink, refusing can be awkward. Pacing yourself is fine though.
  • The sulfur baths in Abanotubani are worth trying. Book a private room in advance if you want one. Swimsuits are fine, and you can add a kisi scrub (a rough exfoliation treatment).
Getting Around
  • The metro has two lines, costs 1 GEL per ride, and runs 6am to midnight. Announcements are in Georgian and English. You can transfer free within 90 minutes of your first tap.
  • Use the Bolt app for taxis - rides are cheap (5-7 GEL for most trips) and you avoid the airport taxi touts who overcharge tourists. Don't take unmarked taxis.
  • Central areas are walkable but hilly with uneven cobblestones - bring comfortable shoes. Pedestrian crossings exist but drivers don't always stop. Make eye contact before stepping out.
  • No night buses or trains - after midnight you'll need to use Bolt or similar taxi apps.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.

  • For long-term travel or remote work, we recommend Ekta.
Best Time to Visit
  • April to June has comfortable temperatures (20-25°C) and fewer crowds. Spring is pleasant though rain is possible.
  • September and October are probably the best months - good weather, fall colors, and wine harvest season (Rtveli) means wine festivals if you're into that.
  • July and August get hot (up to 33°C) and busy with tourists. Winter is cold and drops below freezing, but accommodation is cheaper and the wine bars feel cozier when it's grey outside.
