Tbilisi, Georgia
The main tourist area with the sulfur baths, fortress, and most of the wine bars. Crowded during the day, active at night. Some tourist-trap bars near Shardeni Street - check prices before ordering. Good central base if you want to be near everything.
Sololaki is the Old Town - narrow streets, wooden balconies, and 19th-century buildings in various states of repair. The sulfur baths and Narikala Fortress are here, along with most of the tourist foot traffic. During the day it gets crowded in the main areas, but people still live in these buildings so it's not entirely a museum. Plenty of restaurants and wine bars, many in basement spaces or courtyards. Freedom Square has metro access and is the main orientation point. Streets stay busy into the evening with the bar crowd.

Developing area across the river with the big cathedral and views over Old Town. Metro connected. Fewer restaurants and bars than established areas. Quieter, more local feel - good if you want to be off the main tourist track but still accessible.
The area around Fabrika hostel - good for meeting other travelers. Dezerter Bazaar has cheap local food. Mix of traditional Georgian places and newer wine bars. Metro accessible. Some streets quieter at night away from the main areas.
Central area along Rustaveli Avenue with museums, Opera House, and the funicular to the park. Walking distance to most areas. The main avenue is busy and safe; side streets going up the hill are quieter. Steep terrain.
