Amman, Jordan
The old city with Roman ruins, traditional markets, and the best cheap food. Worth visiting for the authentic experience but go during the day, dress conservatively, and leave before dark. More staring and hassle than tourist neighborhoods but generally safe if you're careful.
Downtown (Al Balad) is the old city where you'll find the Roman Theatre, Citadel, and traditional souks. During the day it's packed - vendors selling spices and gold, families shopping, merchants calling out. Hashem Restaurant here is famous for falafel. The narrow streets wind around and the whole area has more energy than the modern neighborhoods. You'll get stared at more here than in tourist areas, especially if you're not dressed conservatively. Cover up - this is the most traditional part of Amman. After sunset everything shuts down fast and the streets empty out. Don't walk around downtown at night. Get an Uber if you're heading here in the evening.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Rainbow Street is the main tourist area with cafes, bookshops, and restaurants. English is widely spoken, people eat alone without anyone caring, and it feels safe to walk around. Good base if you want both safety and access to Amman's cultural stuff.
The arts district with galleries, cafes, and tree-lined streets. Quieter and more local than the tourist areas, but still welcoming to outsiders. Good if you like art and want something less touristy than Rainbow Street.
The upscale nightlife area with Western-style bars and restaurants. Feels safest for going out at night but costs more and some clubs won't let you in alone on weekends. Good if you want familiar, secure atmosphere over authentic local experience.
