About Amman

  • Amman is Jordan's capital, built across steep hills where each neighborhood has its own character. The city is more modern than many expect - Western-style cafes, traditional souks, and Roman ruins all coexist. It's relatively safe compared to other Middle Eastern cities, though you'll deal with staring and some catcalling, especially outside tourist areas.
  • The hill geography means different neighborhoods feel completely separate from each other. Jabal Amman and Rainbow Street have the cafes and bookshops where tourists hang out. Jabal Weibdeh is the artsy area. Abdoun is where expats and wealthy Jordanians go for nightlife. Downtown is the old city with souks and ancient sites - fine during the day, avoid it after dark.
  • Dress modestly to reduce harassment. Cover shoulders and knees, wear loose clothes. This matters more downtown than in upscale areas. Uber and Careem work well and cost less than 2 JOD for most rides - use them instead of taxis. English is common in tourist spots and hotels, less so in local neighborhoods.
  • The emergency number is 911. Tourist Police hang around major sites if you need help.

Language & Communication

Arabic is the official language. English is common in tourist areas, hotels, and upscale restaurants. Younger people usually speak some English. The 911 line has English operators. Tourist Police at major sites speak English. In downtown markets and local neighborhoods, you'll have better luck with basic Arabic phrases.

Cultural Tips
  • Cover shoulders and knees. Loose-fitting clothes work better than anything tight or revealing. A longer top that covers your backside helps. This matters most downtown - you can relax a bit in areas like Rainbow Street or Abdoun, but still keep it modest.
  • You don't need a headscarf except inside mosques. Carry a light scarf just in case.
  • During Ramadan, don't eat, drink, or smoke in public during daylight. Basic respect.
  • People will offer you tea or coffee. It's normal Jordanian hospitality, not a scam.
  • Wait for a woman to extend her hand before shaking. Public affection between any couple is frowned on, including married heterosexual couples.
  • Friday is the holy day - shops close for prayers. The Jordanian weekend is Thursday evening through Friday, so things get busy Thursday nights.
Getting Around
  • Use Uber or Careem. They're cheap (under 2 JOD for a 15-minute ride), you can track your driver, and there's no arguing about fares. Sit in the back seat.
  • Regular yellow taxis exist but drivers will try to overcharge you. If you use one, insist on the meter or agree on a price before getting in. Better to book through your hotel than hail one on the street.
  • Public buses are confusing with no real schedules or maps. Not worth the hassle when ride-sharing is so cheap.
  • You can walk in tourist areas during the day, but the hills are exhausting. Rainbow Street, Jabal Amman, and Jabal Weibdeh are the easiest areas to walk around.
  • If you're planning day trips outside the city, consider renting a car.
  • For peace of mind on arrival, book your airport pickup in advance.
