Santiago, Chile
Providencia is safe and convenient with good restaurants, cafes, and nightlife. Costs more than other areas but you get walkability and security. Easy metro access to the rest of the city.
Providencia is where you go if you want safe and convenient. It's an upmarket residential area east of Plaza Italia with tree-lined streets and modern apartments. Young professionals, families, and expats live here. The area around Manuel Montt metro stays active until about 11pm with people at sidewalk cafes and bars. Sitting alone in a cafe with a laptop or book is normal - you'll see other people doing it. English gets spoken in most restaurants and shops. Good police presence, well-lit streets. The El Golf financial district adds more security with office buildings and hotels. Costs more than downtown, but that's the tradeoff for the safety.
