Santiago, Chile
Lastarria has cafes, galleries, and bookstores. Good for daytime, sitting alone in cafes is fine. Gets unsafe after dark - go during the day then head to safer areas for evening.
Lastarria is the artsy district between Plaza Italia and Cerro Santa Lucía. Small area with independent bookstores, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants. During the day it's good for wandering around - Café del Museo, Wonderful Cafe, Museo de Artes Visuales. Feels like the intellectual center of Santiago. The problem is it's become a target for theft, especially at night. Once evening hits, people clear out and head to safer areas. Street lighting is okay but the vibe changes after dark. Visit during the day for the cafes and galleries, then go to Providencia or Las Condes for dinner. The cultural stuff is worth seeing, just watch your timing.
