Colombo, Sri Lanka
Beach suburb with relaxed atmosphere, seafood restaurants, and family-friendly vibe. Calmer than central Colombo but requires 30-minute commute to main sights.
Mount Lavinia is 30 minutes south of central Colombo - beach suburb with a slower pace. The sand beach stretches for kilometers, though the water isn't particularly clear due to port proximity. Good for morning walks and sunsets. The area around Mount Lavinia Hotel has beachfront restaurants - La Voile Blanche, Shore by O - serving seafood with ocean views. Middle-class Sri Lankan families use this as a weekend escape, so it has a family vibe rather than backpacker party scene. Sitting alone at beachfront cafes watching the ocean is normal. The neighborhood is calm and safer-feeling than central Colombo. Locals are friendly. Walking the beach during the day is fine, but stick to populated areas and avoid empty stretches after sunset. English works at tourist restaurants and hotels. The downside: you're far from Colombo's main sights. Budget time and money for PickMe rides to the city center.

Trendy area popular with expats and young professionals. Good cafes, restaurants, and hospitals nearby. Safer and quieter than central Colombo, though you'll pay mid-range prices.
Kollupitiya is where most of Colombo's international restaurants and cafes are concentrated. It's safer and more walkable than most areas, with good English and a cosmopolitan feel. You'll pay more for everything here.
