Colombo, Sri Lanka
Popular oceanfront promenade for sunset and street food. Safe during evening hours with family crowds. A destination to visit, not an area to stay.
Galle Face Green is the half-kilometer oceanfront promenade along the Indian Ocean. Not a neighborhood to stay in, but a popular evening spot that fills up around 5pm. Families fly kites, couples walk along the water, street vendors sell isso wade (prawn fritters), string hoppers, and fried snacks. Sunset draws crowds of locals and tourists watching the sky change over the ocean. You'll see women here alone - exercising, taking photos, unwinding after work. It's normal to visit solo. Security patrols keep it family-friendly. Vendors start packing up around 8pm. The area stays lit and busy until about 9pm, then empties out fast. If you're staying at hotels in Colombo 3, you can walk here for sunset. Arrange transport back if you stay past dark. No entry fee.
