Porto, Portugal
Riverside area with local character and fewer tourists than Ribeira. Good for daytime walks and cheaper meals, but the narrow streets get dark and isolated at night. Visit during the day, go elsewhere after dark.
West of Ribeira along the river, historically outside the old city walls and still more residential. Colorful shuttered houses and narrow winding streets - like Ribeira but with fewer tourists and cheaper prices. Nice for walking around during the day with small cafes, local shops, and quieter stretches of riverfront where you can watch boats. Attracts some creative types and young families who want the character without Ribeira's crowds. Eating in the small local places works fine. But those narrow streets that look good in daylight get poorly lit and empty at night - not safe compared to more touristy areas. Less English here since it's residential, though younger people and cafe owners usually manage. Safe during the day with people around, but at night stick to the main riverside path or just go to Ribeira for dinner. Basically a daytime spot for seeing local Porto away from tourists.

University neighborhood with student energy. Historic buildings but modern vibe. Affordable places to eat with a younger crowd. Safe during the day, nightlife is more student party scene. Skip the Miradouro viewpoint after dark.
This is tourist Porto - scenic waterfront, medieval streets, lots of crowds. Safe along the river due to constant activity, though pickpockets target the packed areas. Eating alone here is normal with all the tourists around. Prices are higher than other neighborhoods.
Porto's creative area with coffee shops, vintage stores, and street art. Safe with a younger crowd. Good for working in cafes or eating alone. Cheaper than tourist areas while being close to downtown.
