Jaipur, India
Commercial hub with reliable shopping and dining, no extreme hassling or tourist prices. Safe and practical for day and early evening, not particularly charming.
Jaipur's main commercial street connecting most parts of the city. Wide boulevard with established shops, restaurants, and hotels - middle-class Indian commerce rather than backpacker hostels or upscale boutiques. Busy from morning to late evening with families shopping, office workers getting lunch, tourists looking for jewelry and textiles. Old restaurants like Niros, Natraj, and Handi have been here for decades serving reliable North Indian food. Government shops like Rajasthali have fixed prices on handicrafts, so you skip the exhausting bargaining. English is common enough since businesses deal with domestic tourists and middle-class Indians. Safe during the day and early evening with constant foot traffic and security outside hotels and shops. Eating alone works fine at the established places - you'll see Indian women dining solo regularly. It's practical and commercial rather than charming - wide roads, heavy traffic, concrete buildings. Parking is nearly impossible and traffic jams are frustrating. But you get authentic middle-class Indian shopping and food without the aggressive hassling of Old City bazaars or inflated C-Scheme prices. Good for afternoon shopping and early dinner, then go elsewhere for evening stuff.
