Details

Plaka sits at the base of the Acropolis - pedestrian streets with neoclassical buildings and Byzantine churches mixed in with tourist shops and tavernas. It's heavily touristy but genuinely old. The car-free streets make it easy to wander around, and you'll see plenty of people exploring alone or eating on terraces. English is standard here since shops cater to international visitors. The area is busy during the day and quiets down around 10-11 PM. Tourist Police patrol regularly. Near the Roman Agora, watch for people offering friendship bracelets or magic tricks - they demand payment after. Safe during the day, stick to lit main streets if you're out late.
