Details

University and government area centered on a monument from 1930. Addis Ababa University, Ministry of Education, Archaeology Museum are here. Students going to class, government workers commuting - busy during the day. The square is a major traffic junction where four roads meet, with the restored monument to Haile Selassie's coronation. Daytime it's reasonably safe - government buildings mean police around. University cafes and cheap student food nearby. More English spoken here than traditional areas since students learn it. Gets quiet after dark like most of Addis, don't walk around at night. More of a sightseeing stop than somewhere to base yourself.
