Details

La Mariscal - locals call it 'Gringolandia' - is the backpacker and nightlife zone around Plaza Foch. During the day it's fine. Cafes, tour agencies, and restaurants cater to international travelers. Everyone speaks English and you'll see other travelers meeting up for tours or lunch. But this neighborhood changes completely after dark. Plaza Foch and the blocks right around it have police until around midnight on weekends, but pickpockets and scopolamine scams (drugging drinks) target drunk tourists. Step off the main plaza and streets get sketchy fast. Muggings happen after midnight even on busy streets. If you go out at night: travel in groups, use Uber or registered taxis door-to-door for even short distances, never accept drinks from strangers, watch your belongings constantly. Don't walk around alone late at night. The area has less energy than it used to - businesses have closed due to security concerns.
