San José, Costa Rica
Wealthy suburb where expats live. Very safe with American amenities and shopping, but expensive and completely lacks local character. Choose this for comfort and security, not cultural experience.
Costa Rica's Beverly Hills. Wealthy expats and Ticos live in gated communities and luxury high-rises here. Shopping malls like Multiplaza and Avenida Escazú, American chain restaurants (Outback, etc.), upscale dining, gyms - all the suburban conveniences. Everyone speaks English because of the expat population and international businesses. Crime is lower than central San José, though some pockets are rougher - stick to main commercial areas. It's safe but feels very Americanized. You could be in any American suburb. The area sprawls across hills so you need a car or constant Uber rides. Good if you want familiar comforts and security, but you'll pay premium prices and miss the actual Costa Rican experience. Most people here are digital nomads or long-term expats.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
The safest, most comfortable neighborhood in San José with the best restaurant scene. More expensive than other areas but worth it if you value being able to walk around freely and eat alone without hassle.
Safe residential area with more local character and less tourist presence. Quieter than Escalante with some good restaurants. Less English but still comfortable if you want something more authentic.
Quiet residential area with a big park. Safe during the day, convenient for the airport, but no nightlife. You'll need to taxi elsewhere for food and entertainment.
