Summary

Historic district with 19th-century architecture and boutique hotels. Good for daytime sightseeing but dead at night - go elsewhere for dinner.

Details

Old coffee baron mansions from the 19th century line these tree-lined streets - many converted to boutique hotels, cafes, and galleries now. The Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture makes it popular with photographers. Several embassies are here, which means more police presence than other parts of downtown. It's safe during the day for wandering around and checking out historic buildings, but the area empties out at night when office workers leave. Lighting is inconsistent after dark. Visit during daylight and go elsewhere for dinner. Hotels and some cafes have English speakers, but it's less common than in Escalante.
