Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Historic center with Central Market and colonial buildings. Area around Wat Phnom has high theft rates. Visit during busy daytime hours and watch your belongings closely. New pedestrian zone under construction.
The historic center built around Central Market (Phsar Thmei), which has a distinctive Art Deco dome. Mix of French colonial buildings, business centers, and local commerce. The city is building a 57-hectare pedestrian zone here with shops and restaurants open 6pm-11pm, though it's unclear how that will change things. Central Market sells Khmer food, produce, jewelry, and electronics. Food stalls on the west side (facing Monivong Boulevard) have cheap local meals. The area around Wat Phnom has become known for petty theft - thieves target tourists here. Busy during the day with Cambodians doing business and shopping, but you need to watch your bags and phone carefully. The new pedestrian zone might improve safety, but right now visit during busy hours and keep belongings secured.

Areas with comparable safety profiles for solo female travelers
Main tourist strip with historic sites and river views. Good during the day, but has the city's highest petty crime rate after dark. Use tuk-tuks at night.
Real neighborhood built around a local market. Has trendy cafes that digital nomads like. Less English than tourist areas. Quiet at night. Good if you want authentic feel without being completely isolated.
Bassac Lane has the trendy restaurant and cocktail scene. More local feel than BKK1, safer than Riverside. Bars close at 11pm due to nearby residents. Good for eating alone somewhere with atmosphere.
