Details

Zona Centro contains Plaza Murillo with the Presidential Palace and Cathedral, plus the Witches Market on Calles Jiménez and Linares selling llama fetuses, dried frogs, handicrafts, and amulets. From 9 AM to 5 PM it's busy with tour groups and vendors. Tourist Police are visible around major sites. After 5:30 PM the area changes completely - vendors pack up fast, tour groups leave, and the narrow cobblestone streets empty out. Lighting is poor and even locals avoid walking here after dark because of mugging risk. Come during the day for markets and colonial architecture, but leave before evening. Take taxis to and from this area - don't walk here from other neighborhoods.
