Hobart, Australia
Battery Point has the historic colonial buildings and low crime. Quiet residential area that's five minutes from Salamanca. More expensive but feels authentically Hobart.
Cobblestone streets, colonial cottages from the 1820s, and gas lamps that still work at dusk. Battery Point sits on a peninsula between Salamanca Place and Sandy Bay - heritage-protected, so the village atmosphere stays intact. You'll see locals walking dogs, older couples at cafes, artists in converted cottages. More residential than touristy. During the day you can walk through Arthur Circus with its ring of small houses, or check out antique shops on Hampden Road. At night it's quiet with good lighting and basically no crime. Accommodation costs more here than other areas, but you're five minutes from Salamanca's restaurants while staying somewhere that actually feels like old Hobart.
